Slight anger issues. How can I overcome them?

I make it a point to never let anger show to others, but this is generally just done by bottling it up for a while and excusing myself after being made angry. I just cannot get rid of this anger until I find a spot where I am alone, and let it out by striking a firm surface. The obvious problem of course is that this sometimes damages things. I have put holes in walls, broken a coffee table and a bookcase, dented my car, and my locker at school. I like to think that my ability to not let this anger show for even hours after I am initially angered is a sign I can get rid of it all together through less destructive means, but I have yet to find any that work. To be honest, I am somewhat embarrassed to admit that I sometimes let my emotions influence me into committing such undesirable acts. Any tips on overcoming this problem?

Kill the problem at the root.
For example, if someone says something and you can tell you’re going to get angry just let them know you’re really not happy with it and would prefer it if they stop. If they don’t then just leave and forget about it.
Hope that helped.

I’ve only resorted to punching things once and I was careful about it, I’d go "Man, this is valuable… don’t want to hate myself later" and I’ll throw something pretty much worthless such as a food container (empty of course). Maybe taking something like boxing can be an outlet for you or counseling?
